Yellowstone National Park in the Fall (September - October)
While every season in Yellowstone is remarkable and rememberable let's talk about one of my most favorite times, FALL! Our seasons are dramatic and always put on an amazing show. Each season will have something different to see, colors will change, weather is always an element to consider, and wildlife like to work in their own schedule.
Fall is however a very advantageous time to see our beautiful area and visit Yellowstone. Point one, the crowds die down significantly. Once school goes into session the crowds tamper down and you won't have to worry about parking on long lines at restaurants. I always say plan according and pack snacks or a lunch. Who doesn't love a great picnic next to the river, or while watching elk graze? Of course from a parent perspective always have drinks and snack, never know when you get stuck in a bison jam. It happens!
Point number two, the fall colors! I can't possible show you or tell you how beautiful the orange, yellows, and reds shine and contrast with the surroundings and the wildlife. And sunrise and sunset should not be missed or not planned for. The sky will give you a glory radiance of light that shines on the land and the contrast colors will give you a memory of a lifetime.
Now let's talk about the weather. Anything can happen, no seriously this is a year around thing. I personally love the cool crisp mornings, warm days and temperature drops at night. I sleep so good in that fresh mountain air, and it happens to be my favorite clothing season. I call this hoodie season. Start the day and end the day with one. And who doesn't love a high of 60-70s during the day. It's a just right kind of feel. Now, the reality is it could snow, rain, sleet, hail or all of the above. The price is right! This happens to be a very good time of year to take advantage of the prices as they are much more cost effective, from food, to lodging, to gas all take a nice relief especially for families. Lodging
My last great point, wildlife. They make a reappearance. They love the cooler temperatures, they love the lesser crowds and of course they are all preparing for a nice winter break. So they are eating and getting ready to take a nice rest. You will see so much wildlife you will think, why haven't we done this before. I still recommend early morning at sunrise and later evenings, not just because of the beauty but also because everyone comes out to play.
The season is short lived so it is important to plan accordingly. Check park closure dates as they are usually early November, but it depends on how soon snow makes it's appearance to put the park to bed for the winter.
There are several more reasons why fall is the gem of seasons, but don't take my word for it. You need to experience it yourself and take it all in on your next adventure.
